Mein Haus: The Nickel Tour
Since I started posting the before and afters of our most recent
patio & garden project a few people have asked about the interior of our house. My answer to that is that it is "a work in progress" and it is [pretty much] in a constant state of evolution.
The house itself is a rather large Cape Cod style, brick structure with wood trim. It was built in the mid-1930s by a general contractor as his personal home. There were originally 3 bedrooms and 1 bath on the first floor; a kitchen, a rear foyer, a very large dining room, an very odd-sized lrving room, and a sun porch at the very front of the house. The second story had a great room flanked by 3 bedrooms with 2 very large walk-in closets, and a bath.
My husband acquired the house with his previous wife about 15 years ago and he bought her out of it when they divorced. This has always been something of an emotional sore spot with me and it really delayed our getting started on the much needed renovations.
Some of the rooms are now completed. Others are pending completion, based on sourcing some unusual items that are key to the design. Others are scheduled - and we are getting to them - but it is taking time because we are doing 95% of the work ourselves.
So here you go: The nickel tour of our interior.
Please know that I am saving the untouched rooms and those that are currently under construction until I have a bit more to talk about. Once we're up and running with them I will give them their own space and then add the finished work to this post.
I have some finishing work to do in the guest room but you'll get the idea. We'll be taking on my studio, which consumes the entire second floor, as well as the dining room come Fall 2008. The Kitchen is scheduled for early Spring 2009 and the bathroom will be completed after that.

I love it Haze!!! So creative and ecclectic!!
1Thanks so much Kim! Like I said, it is a real work in progress. I am forever changing things around but this will give you the idea. If you click the photos you can access the links to posts that detail some of the work that went into each room.
2What fun, to take a little tour of the artist's home! Can't wait to see more.
3Thanks so much, Cocoangel. I'm in the process of uploading pics.
4Can't wait to see the rest of your house! It is sooooo pretty - I would never want to leave it if I lived there!!!
5The Foyer Art is amazing! I love it!
6Thank you for showing us your home...I am very excited to see more! Also, please give us some exterior shots!!!
7Thanks so much my friends! I really appreciate the wonderful and encouraging comments.
hanako66: The exterior shots will be along as soon as we are done sprucing the landscaping. We're taking a break on that due to the heat and humidity [and the 9 weeks of labor that went into the patio and garden]. We'll be back to it come September/October. No worries.
8How wonderful thankyou for sharing these beautiful pics!
9The artwork is beautiful and you have such a lovely home.
10Yes, thanks for sharing.
11Fabulous! The cats are pretty darn cute too.
12WOW! I have a couple of different comments. First, I understand about the "divorced issues". My parents split when I was 6, and Dad kept the house and Mom ended up going into my stepdad's house (that he had shared with his ex). Both homes went through lots of purges/updates to get rid of the "ghosts".
You interior complements your creative personality, as well as your patio. That kind of environment looks so inspiring and recharging. I am really impressed. I would love to see it someday (Maybe, next year, you could host a "pot luck" party for us who live nearby???) Awesome job.... please keep up the good work.
13I LOVE that library catalogue filing cabinet...amazing! You are very lucky to have married in to such an artistic family, that artwork is so special!
14what a beautiful job....i may have to ask you for help when i redecorate my apartment!

the only thing a girl should chase is a shot!
15Thanks so much, ladies! This project has been a long time in coming to fruition. Of course we are still working on it but it is getting there. Dining Room. Kitchen. Bathroom. That's the plan. Time frame is the end of 2009. My husband is truly loving the results as well so that is encouraging him. Still - We know it is important to take time in between each phase. We are doing that and are entering a bit of a break mode right now.
tdsollog: Yes. Of course. I am very much looking forward to the pot luck party. That would be a ton of fun!
scolls1583: That's a very nice compliment. Thank you. I'd be happy to chip in my 2 cent take whenever you are ready!
16Ok, I have decided - make room, cuz I'm movin' in!
17You are amazing and wonderful, and have such a great decorating eye. Your artwork wows me, since I can barely draw a stick person!
:hee: :hee: You're welcome anytime, Ms. Martini. Just be warned. You might get lasso'd into the fray of redecorating our humble abode. We have 3 rooms to finish - 7 if you count the rooms that make up my studio - and I could sure use the extra hands.
On a more serious note: Please. tell me true. Here are the entries that Jonathan Adler has reviewed for his contest. http://teamsugar.com/group/429878/casacravings/1869182
I think I will enter the patio [I can cram into 2 photos], our master closet & bedroom [2 photos] and our living room [2 photos]. Do you think that I have any chance whatsoever? Seriously.
18I think you definately have a chance - especially with that patio! And I love your master closet redo, that was amazing! I am crossing my fingers (and other body parts!) for your good luck!
19Well then I better get to it. I can't have you walking around with your stuff all crossed up. I will keep you posted. If I get reviewed in the weekly I'll probably explode. Duck if that happens and avoid the splatter.
20your paintings
21Thanks so much, Iveenia. I'm so glad you like them.
