I am looking for advice to decorate my apartment. I love the great pulled together looks on this site but I just don't have the confidence to put something together myself. Please help me! It's reached the point where I am embarrassed to have people over to my lackluster apartment.
At the moment, I have somewhat of a global theme going on. I have used mostly neutral colors with pops of red. I have been looking for a rug for ages but can't choose one. I like the look of lots of fun pillows but I'm always afraid that any I select will clash. I am completely open to any ideas. I love the way splashes of color look - rather it's a turquoise vase or a sapphire velvet chair. Not that I have any of these - just looks I like.
A few parameters - I can't paint my walls and I don't have a ton of money. I am open to any other ideas - just help me make my apartment look like a grown up with some style lives here. Thank you so much for your help!
Here is what my living room currently looks like:
Living room - you can see the couch, the futon, my lamps, my side table and the boring beige carpet.
A close up of my map wall. I hung these because a) I like maps b) I like all the colors c) they take up lots of space on a big wall.

My favorite piece of furniture and the only piece I bought myself and didn't inherit:
My favorite piece of furniture - my Moroccan style side table.
My Armoire:
TV/computer armoire. It was a hand me down from a friend.

i think it looks nice
maybe a couple of interesting clocks on the wall that show
different time zones that are displayed on the maps, and a coordinating throw for the couch. maybe you could dye the slip covers to something warmer. love the armoire!
1I'm not an expert by any means, but I think I would do a few things just to pull the room together - paint or stain the armoire, maybe black really dark to go with your side table, or a bright color if you're brave. I would also suggest trying out pulling the maps closer together, grouped over the sofa. And for the sofa, definitely see if you can get a tighter fitting slipcover (that's just my taste though). And in terms of shopping, I'd concentrate on a rug and some patterned throw pillows, try browsing for items inspired by that side table. CB2 and Pier 1 have nice affordable pillows, and I like looking at pillowsandthrows.com for more expensive ones.
2I was going to suggest a lot of the same things nat did.
In addition, Target has some great throw pillows and CB2 also has some great rugs.
As for the slipcover, I got a fitted one at Bed Bath and Beyond for only $130.
My only other suggestion would be to scour Etsy/flea markets/garage sales/Ebay for various interesting frames for the maps.
Post updated pictures if you get a chance!
3I like that Moroccan table a lot! It's gorgeous!
4If you'd like you can put on a solid color slipcover on those sofa/futons. Then put some ceiling track lights and focus then onto each map and around the room. Rearrange the lamps. Also, a new window treatment to add more color and light into the room.
Can't wait to see the final look!
I like your choices.I think a touch more color such as the suggestions above would be great!
5I like the table also! I would opt for something more colorful or textured regarding the slipcovers & tie them off with some tasseled cords. You can buy them at a craft store. One idea to bring it all together would be to find dark frames (craft store) for all the maps to coordinate with the table & the armoir (if you decide to stain it). Then find a patterned rug that will compliment it all. Throw pillows would probably be the last thing that I would add, not the first to consider. I am no decorator, just an idea!
Also, a red nosegay or small stack of hardcover books would be cute on the table as an
accent.
6I second(third?) the suggestion that you should paint the armoire. I would suggest red, if you're feeling adventurous. You could use the same shade of red paint on some cheap frames for your maps. Having matching frames and armoire would really tie the whole room together.
And by the way, I love your Moroccan end table! It's a great first buy, I think you're headed in the right direction.
7I really love the maps! I would start by painting the armoire with a bright color that you love....if you are feeling adventurous, you can do something funky on the inside like stripes or a pattern/wallpaper. Also, shop your local thrift shops...you can find some fabulous deals. I would purchase some fabric that you like to cover the couch or add patterned throw pillows in a bright hue (yellow is great and would bring out the color on that map). Also, mirrors do wonders in small spaces:)
Good luck!
8it was REALLY boring apartment ...maps was an excellent choice and i really like this right now.. i would put an aquarium might gave more color and activity
9I agree, the maps on the wall definitely need to be pulled in closer together above the couch so that they look like one complete composition. As for the lamp on the side table, I think a larger lamp shade would be better. Maybe a drum shape. I do love the side table. I think the armoire would be cool if you painted it a deep shade of teal. With all of the blue tones in maps, I think you could use that as you jumping off point for a splash of color. There were some great pillows just posted on Casa from Target that you should check out.
10Okay, I found a few cool lamps for you to check out.

There is a red coral sunset table lamp that would look neat on your dark table plus pick up the reds that you like. Then, there is also a more nautical looking sea grass floor lamp to consider.
11I like the idea of painting the armoire- and maybe even add a little interest to it by adding some Moroccan-inspired stencils to the front doors. (Check out Simply Stated for some ideas) Also, adding some bright colored drapes might help anchor the room some more. You can go for a simple (and cheap) set of drapes, but accent it with a wide strip of fancier fabric down the center.
12you must stain the armoire to either match the side table or be really bold and paint it a very rich morocan red, purple or gold
13Are you finished with this room yet? Any new pics? I still think the maps would look nice if they were matted & framed.
14i think some color on the walls would really help! if you can't paint, how about hanging fabrics on the walls? Or, I once had a roommate drape some light weight sheer colored materials from her ceiling. in a rich translucent red, that could really make the moroccan table more thematic.
15I would change the couch and futon covering to a color other than white, chocolate brown maybe. Move your favorite table into a spot where you can see it better. You could pain the amoire black and distress the edges a bit to add more color,or it could be stained to match you side table.(painting is easy and cheap tho!)
16I feel that the room is lacking in both color and pattern. A few things you could do:
17Change the slip cover to a better fitting, more colorful one. If you're not comfortable with a bright one, try a neutral looking color like sage, grey-blue, even beige would be better than white on white.
Try a couple of throw pillows in bold patterns.
Lowes has awesome rugs for cheap - would be great for your apartment.
I agree with grouping the maps closer together. Maybe not trying a symmetrical look with them but a more scattered, thrown together grouping?
I agree with staining/painting your armoire too. A nice color that is different yet subdued would be nice. eg. I recently sprayed my shelves a deep matte eggplant. Very muted yet striking.
Lastly, could you invest in curtains that go over your blinds? And a more singular floor lamp. There are many lamps available on craigslist for cheap - even target has nice ones for surprisingly less. I love your little table lamp on the lovely moroccan table - I just feel that the floor lamp does not jive with it.
My one piece of advice for pulling it together, try a color family you like - I love reds, so I went with very deep oranges, reds and reddish purples in my front room, with splashes of green. You could do something similar with say blues with splashes of deep yellow or even green, browns with splashes of pretty much any color but I love orange with deep browns.
Agree with Stoopeed. And I really love the maps.
18littlemzfit does give a helpful advice. A modern or contemporary chandeliers or pendants can easily transforming your place. LampP is a big generic. Personally, I prefer www.philazlighting.com
