We bought our house just over a year ago, it was built in 1900, and the kitchen had been partially renovated sometime in the 50's-60's.  It was basically useless, the faucet had very little pressure, there was one small drawer (the rest were fakes) and the countertops were only 32" high with only 15" between top and bottom cabinets, the ventilation for the stovetop was the ceiling fan (which was also the main source of light)

We demo'd everything, rewired the entire kitchen ourselves (to bring it up to code), took up the vinyl floors, and had the original fir floors refinished, then rebuilt our kitchen.  After seven months of weekend warriorism we finished Smiling . Our new kitchen has a window over the sink, a small coffee bar, more counterspace, 11 drawers and 9 lights on five different switches.  Here are some photos:
