I've been doing a little [okay - a lot] of pre-shopping on Crate & Barrel's website, focusing on a rug for our living room. The room has very odd dimensions, being 27' long and only 11' wide, so I've decided to go with an area rug. Sizes seem to be very limited in the styles that I find most attractive and so I've put Photoshop to work to see which would work best in my room.
This is probably the hardest of the decisions that I have to make in putting my prize money to work so I really appreciate your help. Below are the 3 front runners. Please let me know - which do you like best?
Kim also gave me the idea of possibly getting two. I could fix them together as Casa once suggested. This would give me a 4 x 12, which could also work very well.
In addition to this rug, I am also planning on selecting a solid, off white rug (sixe 30 x 50") for our guest room and 2 new Euro-size pillows to fit the shams of our new bedding in the master bedroom.
Since we have so many stores in our mostly local area, I'm going to call ahead and make sure they have what I want in stock. We'll save gas and this should also make my husband happy - not having to drive from the outlet in Cranberry, NJ to Bridgewater Commons.

Bottega Veneta
Normally I'd totally go for the polka dots, but I don't think it would go in that room very well...
♥ SugarKat Honey Bee!
1I had to pick the first because I think those dimensions work best in the room. I like the third one, but I would like it bigger and then I am not sure how it would look with the couch.
2I really think the Genesis matches the style of the room, and highlights the bright red and orange accents, without competing with the pattern of the couch (which the first rug does). The third one seems a bit bland compared to the other two, but it is unobtrusive (which may be a good thing?)
Using photoshop to preview the rugs in your room is a GREAT idea!! I just bookmarked a bunch of rugs on ShopStyle last night for my library. Maybe I will try this to see how they would each look.
3i love the stella rug. but the first one is nice too.
4I'm actually surprised your buying a rug and not making one. I like the Stella b/c it keeps everything looking eclectic and unexpected.

5I know what you're saying, SugarKat, but I actually made a [kind of sad] little rug for this room that looks very similar to Genesis. Of course I cut it to fit the way I want but the 4x6 will do just fine. You can see it in this pic and this one. It's kind of dotty - just like Genesis - and I think it works well.
As an aisde, I should also tell you that these floors will be stripped and sealed this fall and will be more golden blonde than the 70 year old stain that exists on them now.
6This is another one I like as well, but I don't know if it works in your space or not. The couch being so patterned poses a dilemma for me with a rug. This one I think would work well with your blue wall.

7I really like the first one.
8So, when this is all done, are you going to have a party and invite all of us over to enjoy this lovely house we have all been drooling over????
Brendelwoman - Yes. I know exactly what you are saying about the dimensions. That's a 6x9 and the others are not available in that size.
jspeed: Thanks so much for your thoughts. Genesis was actually my first choice when I started looking. Sad, it is not available in 6x9.
Using Photoshop like this saves me a whole lotta time [and trial and error] in a lot of my projects. Too: it's a whole lot easier and less stressful than guessing.
Mandy: I know exactly what you are saying but the first one keeps the vintage vibe going and I think I'm leaning that way when it comes to Stella.
Bella: I already researched the goods to make my own but the amount of labor and the cost of the raw materials is off-putting in this project. In this case, buying one will allow me to get a better quality rug at half the cost. I can't argue with that one - really.
9I really like Genesis as well... is there any way you can add a border to it to make it bigger? But even in the smaller size I prefer it to the others I think the design and colors go so well in that space.
10Brendelwoman: Thanks for the link. I saw that and really liked it originally but I think it has too much of a contemporary vibe.
Ms. Martini: Of course you will all be invited when we're done. Some time next year - before the holidays. I'm pretty much set on that and I'm nagging my husband to get started in the dining room. He has to do the electrical work [cause I just don't go there] and he paints the window frames. He's much better at that kind of stuff than I am and is aces at taking the windows apart and re-assembling them.
Kim: I was just thinking about getting 2 Genesis rugs. I'll add the picture. Then tell me what you think.
11ooh yes Haze 2 would work great!!
12Thanks so much for the idea, Kim. I wasn't thinking that way until you said it. Now I'm down between Genesis Two and Andalou.
Genesis Two works and turns up the PopArt style, giving more punch to the orange accent color.
Andalou is more laid back and feeds more into the vintage vibe.
What to do? I think I have to see them both in the store to finally decide.
13I am still all about the Andalou. I am very into that whole leafy-design that is going on there. I also like the more vintagey feel to the room.
14I'm not going to read the other comments, because I don't want to skew my opinion. I don't like the first one. I think it takes away from the art work above the couch, which should be the focal point of the room. It's too much.
I like setting the rug over by the chairs, but remember, polka dots will not always be "in style".
15Martini, my friend, that is exactly my point of vassilation: play up the vintage feel or make the pop art go *pop*. And I keep on flip-flopping the more I look at them. I really think I need to see both in person before I decide.
Desertbanshee: I see what you are saying but I don't have a problem with the mix of pattern. I included another view of the room [the opposing wall] so you can see all of the elements together.
Funny: I must be the only one that doesn't feel Genesis as a polka-dot pattern. I just see it as orbs of color - not so much like polka-dots that would be on a dress or a coat.
With all of this in mind we're going to end up at both Jersey stores. Oh... Boy.
16I also didn't think of Genesis as polka dots, Haze. And now that you show it with the take 2 view....it really pulls the orb pattern off of the opposite wall! Now I am not so sure about the Andalou! LOL!
17Now here's the other consideration:
This is a very long and narrow room. I had nightmares about decorating this room when DC and I first moved in together - I'm not kidding - absolute nightmares.
Once I hung the floor to ceiling drapes, I felt that it made the room feel less confining in width because it maximized the height and breadth of the room.
Herein lies the rub, a 4'x12' rug is going long and very narrow once again. Maybe it will be offset because of the drapes. Then again - maybe not. This is why I am still considering 1 Genesis to replace my homemade jobby. It, the one by itself, does a great job of breaking up the dance floor created by the chairs but it doesn't highlight the length. You know what I'm saying.
18I don't think of Genesis as polka dots either. I like it because it does play up the pop art side of the room as opposed to the vintage side... I like that the furniture is vintage whereas accessories (ie: art, rugs) are pop art. I think it's a nice balance.
I can't wait to see what your thoughts are after you see the rugs in person. You may hate them both (good Lord I hope not though!) or you might find something in the store that totally jumps out at you!
19
That's all I need: Rugs jumping out at me. OMG.
20After all of this I've pretty much decided on Genesis, be it 1 or 2. I am reserving any and all other considerations until I go visit them in person. Now I'm off the hot seat.
Dear Haze
21I like your style
it was only a pity to point to the rugs - your paintings need the attention...
None of the rugs work!
22Iveenia! Thanks so much. My art thanks you too. But I do need a rug in this room. We'v not had one down for awhile and I kind of miss the feel. I just have to pick one already.
Michaelrcks: That's interesting. Care to offer your sugeestions?
23I like all the rugs on their own, but I think I would be looking at something in a blue close to the colour of your foyer chairs. I might think about going with some texture and a small pattern. You already have a lot of pattern and mixing pattern is great with me too, if you did not have pattern on your settee. The blue would complement your blue in the picture, and settee cover and hightlight the orange ottoman......
24Haze, darling, so glad you gave the last option, because I had to go with that one. I think with any of those rugs, that's just too much going on. How about a deep-toned SOLID shag or whatever is your pleasure. See rugsusa.com. If you want me to suggest a specific one, I could do that, too.
25I voted for "Genesis: Take two and make a 4x12." I think it blends the best, where as the first and 3rd seem to go against the color palette. Although I personally like the room without a rug; I think it makes the space look more open, a little wider.
26Genesis makes things really stand out although I think they all look rather nice!
27I love the Andalou....I like how it complements the rest of the room without being "matchy". The Genesis reminds me of the rug that we originally saw in that space and works very well with your style. I voted for Andalou:)
28I like the idea of the 6 X 9 size...it seems to fit better in the room. I also like the idea of the rug not trying to fight and take center stage over your artwork. A more neutral colored rug would highlight the room, and allow you to make those changes in accessories and artwork I know you'd love to be able to do. Good luck!
29Excellent work with the photoshop pre-shopping! Please consider using your creative energy with FLOR for the carpet (http://www.flor.com/). You could customize the size so much better and I think get a result that would showcase your art more successfully. I just think all of the CB choices are competing a bit with the real stars...your art!
30Thanks so much for all of the input. I showed the Photoshopped snaps to my husband and he likes Genesis 1. Honestly - We're going to have to meet the rugs in person. But I am taking the shots of the room with me so I can hold up the rugs to the room and make a firm [and well thought out] decision then.
sgdish [and everyone]: We're definitely considering going more neutral. I am a change-aholic and frequently move the art around [and sometimes make more] to suit my moods. These are excellent points that we will definitely be considering.
rbid: I adore the Flor concept so much. Thank you too for the comments on my artwork.
31Have you considered a shag rug? You seem to have a very mod theme going in that room, and a white or light gray shag rug would seem to do the trick to not only lighten the dark hard wood, but also to complement that 60's era feel.
32Haze.... My first choice is Andalou 6x9, then my second choice would be Genesis: Take two and make a 4x12. I think it's so smart that you've used Photoshop to "try on" the rugs.
Again, congrats on the win. You really deserve it.
33Now that you've updated the pics and changed angles, Andalou is looking better.
I don't think you can go wrong with any of your choices. Just go with your gut!
34Thanks so much Ladies. I've heard that the gift card should arrive on Wednesday or so and I'm super excited to meet my selections in person. I'm really holding off on my final decision until then. Thanks so much for all of the input though. I do appreciate - very much.
JenEliz: Yes. I fist considered a shag. C&B has a gorgeous one [at least it looks gorgeous online] but, with 4 cats a shag would be very hard to keep clean.
tdsollog: I use PS to try on a lot of things in a lot of my projects. It's a HUGE headache saver and it also saves me on a lot of mistakes. You can use almost any image editing program to do it too. Investing in Photoshop isn't really necessary.
jspeed: I keep going back to that one too. I also like the proportions. I'll have to see. I've made prints of my room to take with me so it will remove the guess work completely.
35I think Genesis gives a pop touch to your room.
